May 11 and 19: EAC’s Pollinator Pitstop Plant Giveaway

When: Saturday, May 11 (5:30p-6p), and Sunday, May 19 (1:30p-2p)

Where:  Opalanie Park (1422 Saint Matthews Road)

Lanceleaf coreopsis is a gorgeous sunny flower that blooms all summer – AND it is the West Vincent Environmental Advisory Council Pollinator Pitstop Plant of the Year. We are giving away 250 plants to West Vincent residents – get yours while they last! This cheerful plant fits almost anywhere, reaching a height of at most 2 feet tall. The flowers start in late spring and last all summer. It is a perennial, which means it comes back every year. You don’t need to replant. It prefers full sun.

Deer don’t like to eat it. Birds love to eat the seeds in fall. It supports 5 species of caterpillars and is considered of special value to native pollinators, feeding butterflies, moths, and native bees the pollen and nectar they need.

Don’t let the pretty flowers fool you! This plant is tough! It can survive drought, although it will flower more profusely if given a weekly watering. It makes a good container plant. If you have time, cutting off the dead flowers in the summer encourages new blooms. To feed the birds, as fall approaches, start leaving the flowers in place so the plant can make seeds.

Your EAC has grown 250 plants to give away this spring. They are outgrowing their pots! You have 2 opportunities to get your plant at Opalanie Park: Saturday, May 11 from 5:30-6pm and May 19 from 1:30 – 2pm. If these times don’t work for you, email us at eac@westvincenttwp.org and we can make other arrangements.
