Important health initiative from CCHD:

“Each year, the Chester County Health Department receives more than 1,000 reports of people injured by animal bites or scratches. Every report is carefully investigated and evaluated for potential rabies exposure, and treatment is recommended in cases where the virus cannot be ruled out. On average, Chester County confirms about 15 cases of animal rabies annually, primarily in wildlife such as raccoons, bats, and foxes—though outdoor cats have also tested positive. While the number of confirmed cases is relatively low, the number of reported injuries by animal bites is high.

To understand the high incidence of animal bites, we conducted a multi-year analysis last year. The analysis showed a need for increased awareness among the public, healthcare providers, veterinarians, police, etc. about the importance of reporting animal bites. Hence, we are launching a multi-pronged awareness campaign this year.
