What Causes a Lithium-Ion Battery to Catch Fire?

Inside a Li-ion battery, there are tiny metal pieces floating in liquid, and the contents are under pressure. So, if the battery is punctured, or if metal fragments migrate, the lithium reacts with water in the air. This creates high temperatures and may produce a fire.

How do I know if my battery is bad?

Signs that your battery is near the end of its life include:

  • It does not hold a charge well
  • It will not perform like it used to
  • It gets very warm during a charge

What should I do with a damaged or leaking battery?

Place the battery in a bucket or plastic bag and surround the battery in non-flammable material such as kitty litter, soil, or sand as soon as you can. Do NOT place the battery in your recycling bin or trash can. Treat as Household Hazardous Waste.

Li-ion batteries that overheat, are swollen or bulging, are discolored, deformed or have an odor, should immediately be isolated from heat sources and other batteries.

Updated: 2/22/2022

Fire extinguishers consist of a hand-held cylindrical pressure-vessel, usually made of steel or aluminum and an agent, which can be discharged to extinguish a fire. There are two main types of fire extinguishers: stored pressure and cartridge-operated. Stored pressure fire extinguishers are the most common type and, of these, the ones that have a dry chemical as the agent are most common. The dry chemical is typically mono ammonium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate – all of which are considered non-toxic.

Are there any hazards to be concerned about with fire extinguishers?

The main concerns are:

  • Contents are under pressure and may explode when combined with other materials.
  • Very old fire extinguishers (pre 1960’s) may contain carbon tetrachloride, a known carcinogen.

If you have a very old fire extinguisher and the label says it contains carbon tetrachloride, contact the Chester County Solid Waste Authority at 610-273-3771 ext. 228, for advice on what to do with the extinguisher.

If It’s Empty:

  • Squeeze the lever above the handle: this will ensure that all contents are discharged
  • Remove the head so that the recycler knows the container is empty
  • Recycle the steel body: Once the head is removed, the container can be sent to a metals recycler.

If it Is Not Empty:

The casing is usually made out of steel or aluminum and can be recycled. Recyclers will not accept containers that are not empty so you have to discharge all contents first.

When emptying the container for disposal:

  • Discharge outside, away from children or pets
  • For safety, wear goggles and particulate mask when discharging extinguisher
  • Pull the pin on the extinguisher – this unlocks the operating lever
  • Squeeze the lever above the handle to discharge the contents
  • Aim low and discharge contents into a bucket or another container
  • After you have finished discharging the contents and nothing else comes out, remove the head from the container – this will let the recycler know that the extinguisher is empty

Fire extinguishers can be taken to:

  • Marco, Inc. , 320 Commerce Drive, Exton, PA 610-363-2233 ( Completely discharged please)
  • West Whiteland Fire Department, 227 Crest Ave., Exton, PA ONLY FROM WEST WHITELAND RESIDENTS 610-363-9066

Tape can be used to pick up small pieces and power. Do not use a standard vacuum cleaner. Avoid generating dust. The first time you vacuum, remove bag and dispose in 2 sealed plastic bags.

The Clean Air Act of 1990 requires recapture, recycling and safe disposal of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers as coolant. Under the Act, no one may accept an item containing CFCs or HCFCs for recycling or disposal unless the Freon® contained within it is properly removed and the owner/hauler/appliance company can show proof of proper removal. It is also unlawful for any person to knowingly release or vent CFCs or HCFCs into the air. The EPA requires certifications for all technicians removing Freon® as of 11/14/94. For more information, call the EPA’s Stratospheric Protection Hotline at 1-800-296-1996.

Prevention

Preventing waste in the first place is the best, least expensive method of disposal. For all waste items, we recommend you follow disposal options in this order:

  1. REDUCE

Buy only what you need you and return unopened cans. If you are at the end of a job and realize you only need a small amount to finish, exchange the unopened can for a quart.

2. RE-USE

Use leftovers for second coats, touch-ups, painting fences, bird houses, basements, give to a friend, neighbor or small business owner, etc. OR – donate leftovers to community groups, school and local theater groups, recreation departments, sign painters, farmers for fences, etc.

3. RECYCLE

Old latex paints can be blended together to produce beige or gray. Oil-based paints may also be mixed together. DO NOT MIX OIL-BASED PAINT WITH LATEX PAINT. Mix different latex paints together, use for fences, basements, sheds, etc.

4. DISPOSE OF SAFELY
If no other alternatives exists. What cannot be reused can be solidified and sent to the landfill by following the instructions for latex and oil-based paint:

  • LATEX PAINT – latex paint is not hazardous waste. Latex paints are water-based and are a safer substitute for oil-based paints. They may be solidified (allowed to harden), absorbed and then placed in the trash. Take the top off the paint can, place outside, away from pets and children and allow it to harden. If the can is very full, absorb the material by mixing it with sawdust, clay based kitty litter or rags. Stir with a stick until all the paint is absorbed. When the paint is solidified it may be placed in the trash. Container with no liquid paint may be placed in the trash, Call 610-2373-3771 ext 228 for more explicit directions.
  • OIL-BASED PAINT – save oil-based paint for a household hazardous waste collection day.  If none is scheduled you may mix with an absorbent like sawdust, clay based kitty litter or rags. Small quantities may be mixed in one can; larger quantities ca be mixed in a box lined with a plastic bag. Stir with a stick until all the paint is absorbed. Seal the solidified paint and can, absorbent stick, box, etc. in a plastic bag and dispose with trash. NOTE: mix outside, away from children and pets. Use Gloves. Avoid if you have chronic respiratory problems.
