DO NOT PLACE BATTERIES IN YOUR CURBSIDE RECYCLING BIN OR TRASH!
Except for Alkaline batteries (see below) most batteries need some special attention. (HHW refers to Household Hazardous Waste)
Note: Check your battery packaging to accurately match the battery to its type, as some batteries may have several images, and not all are reflected here.

What Causes a Lithium-Ion Battery to Catch Fire?
Inside a Li-ion battery, there are tiny metal pieces floating in liquid, and the contents are under pressure. So, if the battery is punctured, or if metal fragments migrate, the lithium reacts with water in the air. This creates high temperatures and may produce a fire.
How do I know if my battery is bad?
Signs that your battery is near the end of its life include:
What should I do with a damaged or leaking battery?
Place the battery in a bucket or plastic bag and surround the battery in non-flammable material such as kitty litter, soil, or sand as soon as you can. Do NOT place the battery in your recycling bin or trash can. Treat as Household Hazardous Waste.
Li-ion batteries that overheat, are swollen or bulging, are discolored, deformed or have an odor, should immediately be isolated from heat sources and other batteries.

Fire extinguishers consist of a hand-held cylindrical pressure-vessel, usually made of steel or aluminum and an agent, which can be discharged to extinguish a fire. There are two main types of fire extinguishers: stored pressure and cartridge-operated. Stored pressure fire extinguishers are the most common type and, of these, the ones that have a dry chemical as the agent are most common. The dry chemical is typically mono ammonium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate – all of which are considered non-toxic.
Are there any hazards to be concerned about with fire extinguishers?
The main concerns are:
If you have a very old fire extinguisher and the label says it contains carbon tetrachloride, contact the Chester County Solid Waste Authority at 610-273-3771 ext. 228, for advice on what to do with the extinguisher.
If It’s Empty:
If it Is Not Empty:
The casing is usually made out of steel or aluminum and can be recycled. Recyclers will not accept containers that are not empty so you have to discharge all contents first.
When emptying the container for disposal:
Fire extinguishers can be taken to:

The Clean Air Act of 1990 requires recapture, recycling and safe disposal of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers as coolant. Under the Act, no one may accept an item containing CFCs or HCFCs for recycling or disposal unless the Freon® contained within it is properly removed and the owner/hauler/appliance company can show proof of proper removal. It is also unlawful for any person to knowingly release or vent CFCs or HCFCs into the air. The EPA requires certifications for all technicians removing Freon® as of 11/14/94. Prevention
Preventing waste in the first place is the best, least expensive method of disposal. For all waste items, we recommend you follow disposal options in this order:
Buy only what you need you and return unopened cans. If you are at the end of a job and realize you only need a small amount to finish, exchange the unopened can for a quart.
2. RE-USE
Use leftovers for second coats, touch-ups, painting fences, bird houses, basements, give to a friend, neighbor or small business owner, etc. OR – donate leftovers to community groups, school and local theater groups, recreation departments, sign painters, farmers for fences, etc.
3. RECYCLE
Old latex paints can be blended together to produce beige or gray. Oil-based paints may also be mixed together. DO NOT MIX OIL-BASED PAINT WITH LATEX PAINT. Mix different latex paints together, use for fences, basements, sheds, etc.
4. DISPOSE OF SAFELY
If no other alternatives exists. What cannot be reused can be solidified and sent to the landfill by following the instructions for latex and oil-based paint:
