The Performance
In late winter and early spring evenings, male woodcocks perform conspicuous displays dubbed “sky dances” by naturalist Aldo Leopold.
The display begins with a buzzy, nasal peent call as the male turns in a tight circle to broadcast to all nearby females. Suddenly, he launches into the air, circling higher and higher until almost invisible, his wings making a distinctive chittering sound. At the apex of his flight (200–350 feet), he switches to a series of high-pitched chirps before tumbling back to earth in a steep dive to begin his display anew.
What to Expect
We will meet for a short introduction in the parking lot, then walk together to the area where they danced last year.
- What to Wear: Please wear sturdy shoes and warm clothes for the walk and for standing quietly while we wait for sundown.
- Timing: The woodcocks tend to display about 20 minutes after sunset.
- What to Bring: You may want to bring a cushion to sit on. PLEASE BRING A FLASHLIGHT, as we will be hiking back to our cars in the dark.
RSVP
Kids are welcome and encouraged to join! Even if we don’t spot a woodcock, it will be a lovely evening to connect with nature.
Email us at EAC@westvincenttwp.org to RSVP. We will utilize the rain date if the weather is poor.
